The comprehensive school guidance program at Miles
is designed to support the mission of the school by promoting and
enhancing the learning process of every student through
integration of academic, career, and personal/social development.
Many prevention topics are addressed through
classroom guidance, small group counseling, individual counseling,
and district approved school-wide presentations.
The counselor curriculum is provided by
 Debra Mora
Patricia Pichardo
Toni Cox
Teresa Harlach

We are always available to teachers, parents, and students.
Examples of these topics include:

  • Physical and Emotional Health/Safety
  • We teach about personal space and how to keep ourselves safe, not only at school but at home and in the community
  • District wide shows are also scheduled throughout the year

  • Career Education
  • Every year, Miles participates in The Great American Teach-In once a year in November, where community members visit our school and teach our children about various careers. It gives students an opportunity to hear first hand about various hobbies and career possibilities!

  • Character Education
Which includes a character trait every month;
a child from each classroom is chosen to receive
a treat for showing the character trait

Below are the character traits in order:
Respect
             Effort
Self-Discipline
Perseverance
Empathy
Citizenship
Trustworthiness

**Please be sure to incorporate the character traits in everyday
conversations as they are vital to
creating successful children and further, adults**

  • Refer Families for outside help
  • From agencies such as FASST, crisis centers, Hillsborough kids, Child and Family Safety etc...

  • Peer Mediation/Conflict Resolution
We have a group of 5th graders that are trained resolve conflict between other students.
They are trained to not pick sides and help both of the
students in conflict get to a "win-win" situation.
It has been proven to work as children are more
likely to listen to their peers.
It also encourages positive peer interactions

  • Bullying Prevention
Miles has recently adopted the "Steps to Respect" anti-bullying program.
It encourages positive peer interactions and respect for all.

  • Drug, Alcohol, and Violence Prevention
Miles celebrates RED RIBBON WEEK, which celebrates "Say No to Drugs Week"
Miles Participated in MOSI "Too Good for Drugs Walk"
At the school we also had a door decorating contest, where students
put their best foot forward and decorated their classroom doors with the "Say No to Drugs" theme
All students are educated on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and violence.
Red Ribbon week this year will be the week of OCTOBER 24-28th!!

  • Character Kid of the Month
We also celebrate your child's accomplishments with
Character kid celebrations at the end of each month

  • Assessments and Evaluations
Academic, intellectual/cognitive processing, behavioral assessments, and
positive behavior support plans

  • "What's Happening At Miles" WHAM
Every morning the school watches the WHAM show over the open circuit television where
educational tips for students take place

Ask your child about the Morning show!

  • Attendance Incentives
Students are rewarded 3 ways by guidance plus:
WEEKLY
(perfect attendance classes are placed in a drawing),
MONTHLY
(the best attendance for the month in both primary and intermediate classes get cupcakes)
                 QUARTERLY for attendance
(1 perfect attedance student in each grade goes to McDonald's on a trip)

Mu$tang Money
Students are given Mustang Money for following our guidelines for success. The Money is used for reinforcing positive behavior only. Students collect the money and can use it towards events and prizes that we hold here at the school.

So please make sure that your child is coming to school everyday!
It is vital to their learning, because if they are not at school,
they will miss out on what the rest of the class is learning!
